Digital Camera: Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS CameraSilver 80MP 3x Optical Zoom 25 inch LCD

I bought the chocolate coloured model as a companion to my Nikon SLR, as it is so much smaller and also shoots pretty high quality video. I carry it everywhere, thanks to its size - even if it is pouring with rain and I don't want to risk getting the Nikon wet, I can pop the Canon in my pocket in case I need it. Battery life is good, and yes, as other reviewers have said, you will need a bigger memory card!
Photo quality is excellent, I'm generally very impressed with this camera and would recommend it to anyone.
I reckon the camera looks much better in reality than the photos show, and the colour choices are nice too. I am about to buy the leather case to protect it as I'm off round Scotland next month and don't want any scratches!

I have had this camera for less than 6 months (purchased Dec 2009)and took it on holiday to Lanzarote in March. I have used it frequently since the holiday. In May I got the message 'lens error please restart' on the LCD screen and it has not worked since so lasted less then 5 months. I contacted Canon and one of the first things they advised me was 'please note that it is not covered under warranty if the len is contaminated with grit/sand' Weird thing to advise me at the start of the call! I checked their T&C's and there it was.... a single sentence covering sand/grit lens contamination, not something I would have expected to see in an everday use pocket camera user booklet. It was taken to a Canon repair centre and guess what???? Report stated sand/grit in lens and cost to repair a staggering £126!!!!!! Almost the same price as the camera was originally. I was on a beach on my Lanzarote holiday for about 20 mins and did not use the camera while on the beach, Lanzarote however does tend to be windy so there is a fair chance some dust/grit/sand could have blown onto the camera. How this can then find it's way into the lens mechanism is totally beyond me. Canon are obviously well aware of this problem as I have read many tales of woe on other sites and some even mention getting their camera repaired under the warranty a while back. NOT ANY LONGER......I would not touch another Canon camera with a barge pole and would advise you to NOT purchase this camera unless you want to end up with a hefty bill for repairing it if a bit of grit/sand touches the lens. They don't even include a protective cover for it......poor product, easily breaks and costly to repair. Definitely not recommended.

Really good camera through which I took some great family photo's. Was working great until I lent it to my sister for a holiday trip she had planned. The camera came back broken:( Was a good camera while it was in my hands though.

I really loved this camera which I only used as a snapshot camera when out on my bike or if I didn't fancy carrying anything larger around. However, after 13 months of infrequent use it developed a fault which shows a blue vertical line down the centre of the screen. This line also appears in the actual photograph. I contacted Canon service and was told to send it to their authorised repair centre. I obtained an estimate for repair of £95 to service it. I then asked Canon if they would offer a goodwill payment towards repair as it was only just out of warranty and little used at that.

This is their reply:-

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your Canon camera.
We apologise for the inconvenience.
In response to your inquiry whether Canon can,as a goodwill gesture, to help you pay for your camera repair (taking into consideration that your camera is 13 months old and under no warranty any more), I do regret to infom you that in this case all inspections and repairs of your camera are subject to fees, set by our Authorized repair facilities:

I am not impressed! I really wanted to buy the Ixus100is as a replacement and later on replace my Canon EOS600 with a Canon DSLR but am not happy with the customer service so will have to think long and hard before stumping up more hard earned cash.

So 5 stars because when it worked it was excellent.

But zero stars for longevity and customer service.

UPDATE
After e-mailing Canon to say I was not happy with their response as above, they offered to repair it subject to condition. They must have been happy with it as they did repair it FOC and returned it in 8 days. Excellent !

Bought this camera for my daughter and she's been using it for a while now, very successfully. It was very easy to get used to the various settings and using the video was really easy. It's small enough to be able to carry around and the picture quality is very good. Bought it due to the very positive reviews that it had already received and can only add to these.
