Customer Reviews for Boss Micro BR Multi Track Recorder
Patience is the key posted on 2010-07-27
Having spent months looking for a cheap way of recording and mixing my own guitar tracks, the Boss Micro BR seemed to fit my criteria perfectly. There is no need for external effects as the range of built-in effects is more than adequate, with quality sound and ease of editing. Having read other reviews of the BR, a common problem seems to be that people think the guitar sounds are tinny but I have found that good quality earphones easily solve that issue. And unlike what other reviewers have stated, it is also possible to run external effects through the unit.

At first glance, this portable music recorder looks complicated to use and it is essential to use the instruction manual, despite how daunting it seems. It took me five hours to work out how to record a second track, but since then four tracks were recorded in no time at all, once I became familiar with the format. And the finished product is a clean, professional sounding recording which is easy to convert to MP3 when you connect the device to a PC. I bought the Boss Micro BR as a temporary fix until I could afford a more expensive recording and mixing unit, but already I am finding that now I have my Micro BR, there is no real need to splash out on an expensive full size mixer.

Sony should have kept it simple posted on 2010-03-30
I bought this and returned it after two days. I wasn't expecting much, but I was disappointed, nonetheless. Too many frills, and not enough decent basics. Loads of guitar effects to choose from, and a fair amount of drum patterns. However, when I tried to run my own effects pedals through it, guess what? No can do. So if you want to record your "own" sound, forget it. The inbuilt guitar effects are ok, but a bit tinny.

This device is ok if you just want to fanny about, play along with a drum beat, use it as an amplug type thing, etc. However, after I sent it back I decided to get the Boss RC2 loop station, and I'm glad I did. Better for putting down your ideas, and better for just jamming.

Less is more.

Something that actually works at last! posted on 2010-03-10
I was looking for a recorder to create some backing tracks and after reading the reviews, which were all excellent I decided to purchase the Boss Micro BR. It was delivered very quickly and put to use straight away. It does exactly what the manfacturers claim and I am very pleased with it, but I would add that you really do need to carefully read the 134 page handbook to get the best out of it. I am still finding how some of the features work. It is not an intuitive machine, but once you get the hang of it the results are brilliant. A DVD handbook with examples would be an advantage. I subsequently purchased the Micro BR mic a 1gb card and a power supply as it is fairly battery intensive.
My advice to prospective purchasers is definitely go for it. You will not be disappointed.

A recording studio in your pocket. posted on 2009-11-18
In short, it's terrific. The downside is the complexity of its menus - it's taken me several months to become totally familiar with even its basic microphone recording facility! The written manual is as big as the recorder. The internal microphone is more than adequate, but only produces a mono recording. Roland do a plug-in powered external stereo mike, (BA-CS 10) but I haven't yet been able to find one. Sony make excellent stereo mikes too (ECM DS70P and ECMMS 907) but BEWARE...the market is full of fake Sonys, at seemingly giveaway prices, and none of them are any good. 2.5V power for the mike is provided from the Micro BR itself.

Purchasers of this recorder should also buy the Boss PSA-240 mains adapter - battery life is OK but markedly reduced if you have to do lots of button-pushing (and you will have to, at least until you're familiar with it!). It's also worth mentioning that the demo SD card supplied with the recorder is too small. You really need a 1GB SD card (apparently this is the largest useable card) and this gives hours of recording time and maximum memory storage. BUT 1GB SD cards are getting difficult to find now. Huge capacity cards, as sold in photographic shops, don't seem to be compatible.

Whilst the Micro BR design leans heavily towards electric instruments (it has a guitar-in jack and plenty of on-board effects), I only use it for microphone recordings and I've only explored one tenth of its capabilities. It has totally replaced my "quality" reel-to-reel and cassette recorders. It will do everything that they would have done, and more. And it fits into a coat pocket.
