Tiffen 52POL 52mm SR Polarizer Filter
Polarizers provide color and contrast enhancement. Reflected light often shows up as whitish glare that washes out color in an image. A Polarizer corrects this problem producing deep, dramatically blue skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces, such as windows and water. Color saturation in general, especially outdoors, can be improved significantly.
Features
  • Essential general-use outdoor color filter
  • Produces deeper skies and minimizes reflections in black and white and color photography
  • Combine a Polarizer with a Red 25 for incredibly dramatic black and white landscapes
  • Can be rotated to achieve desired effect
  • Use the Tiffen Polarizer with the enhancing filter for more dramatic effects

Customer Reviews for Tiffen 52POL 52mm SR Polarizer Filter
Quite a strong effect posted on 2009-06-24
I shall first say that as a relative newcomer to photographic filters, I can't yet translate the specifications ("colour temperature", "stops") into how much effect the filter will actually have, so this was bought really as an example of what to expect.
The "A" in 80A refers to the strength of effect I believe. Certain other filter manufacturers use the convention that A is the weak end of the effect; whether Tiffen use a different convention or whether the 80 series is quite strong in general I am not sure, but to me it seems to be quite a strong effect.
I was hoping for a fairly subtle blue effect, but this casts a very obvious blue hue over everything. One could probably not use it for photographing a person, for example, as only the orangest of fake tans would come up looking natural - everyone else would look distinctly hypothermic. This one is probably best used for landscapes then, and might well yield some dramatic effects against a strong sunset.

I have given it full marks because what it does it does well. Yes, it's probably uncoated as the last reviewer suggests, but for a mere £8 (check the prices of some other Tiffen filters!) that is to be expected. Prospective buyers need only ask whether such a strong effect is really what they want.

I shall hang on to this filter nevertheless, it may well be useful at some point - the right job for the tool, if you like. But I am still seeking a reasonably priced subtle blue filter.

I got this filter to protect my 50mm 1.8 lens, and to make colours warmer when I am using film.
So far so good, I haven't had any problems with it. It is uncoated, which means that it is easier to clean, but will give more flare, if there are bright lights in the frame or directly outside it.
Very happy with the purchase.
