Digital Camera: Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide

I purchased this book along with the Magic Lantern Compact Guide for the G10 because they are the only 2 books I could find that come close to addressing the Canon G series compact digital camera, Powershot G9, which I possess. This particular book discusses the history and technical features of the G series up to and including the G7 and was published before the G9 came onto the market. The Magic Lantern Compact Guide picks up the story starting at the G10 but contains numerous cross references and comparisons to its natural predecessor, the G9. There has never been a Powershot G8 model because 'G8' sounds like a Japanese expression which has unfortunate connotations.

The technical user guide that accompanies the G9 is an excellent and authoritative document but it was written for the expert camera user in mind. I was seeking a book that described, as far as practicable, many of the features of the G9 in more generic and less technical terms. I was not seeking a beginners guide but this book might be so described. The Magic Lantern Compact Guide is quite different and intended for the expert user.

As an introduction to the Canon Powershot G series this is an excellent book for the beginner and intermediate digital camera user. It does not address the G9s particular feature set but it does the address the development of the Powershot series up to and including the venerable G7, the predecessor to the G9. The G9 has many of the features of the G7, some of which have been enhanced.

Digital camera development is moving very fast and the G series, up to and including the G10, have already been superseded. Consequently this book is important for historical reasons and it can now be found in bookshops at discounted prices. This makes it a bit of a bargain.

I have this book and found it brilliant just what I was looking for. It bridges the gap between the manual and tells you how to set the camera and take the type of picture you wish for. Excellent

DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS BOOK posted on 2009-08-12

I am very disappointed with this book. I was expecting an intermediate to advanced book on photography tailored to the Canon Power Shot. The manual that comes with the camera does not explain in detail how to apply settings to obtain specific results (and was not expecting this from the manufacturer's manual). I though that this book would do this (as advertised) however this book is nothing more than a a large colour version of the owners manual. The first three chapters are devoted to identifying all the buttons and switches (the purpose of which are intutively obvious). The rest of the book is then devoted to the most basic of principles when taking photographs and dishes out gems like -- "switch to the "snow mode" when taking pictures of snow. Unfortunatly, the sections on photo techniques and composition has almost no reference to the settings that one should use to get the photos that the author uses to show the examples of his great photos under the various conditons.

In short, don't choose this book if you are looking for a guide to your Canon camera. It adds nothing of value to the manual that is supplied with the camera.

I bought this book on the strength of a review on here that it was a good guide for the G9 in tandem with the official manual
Well lets get it out in the open there is no mention of G9 in the book however there is a picture of a G7 which i assume has the same features of the G9 as regards menus etc I have looked at this book and some Menus look familiar but not exactly the same

A book to bridge between the instructions and photo technique posted on 2008-10-10

I bought this for the G9 but no worries it does the trick. I found the 200 page instructions that came with the G9 camera explain stuff like how to get AEA setting but not what it actually does. This book bridges the gap between the camera instructions and those books on how to take a good photo.
